Introducing solid foods to baby can be a daunting task with so many questions. An important point to note is that a baby’s digestive system is generally not capable of absorbing foods more complex than breast milk or formula until at least 4 months.


So when should you introduce solids?

Your baby will often let you know when she is ready. For example if a 240ml feed is no longer satisfying or if the interval between feeds becomes shorter over time, or if she starts to become unsettled over night. A sure sign is if she’s reaching out to chew everything she lays her eyes on!

How much solids should I introduce?

Breastmilk and/or formula will still remain the primary and most important food for your baby at the 4-6 months age. In the initial stages don’t expect your baby to digest more than 1 -2 teaspoons of solids in a sitting. However you’ll need more than that to allow for hits, misses, spitting and dribbles.

The pouch spoon allows you to control the “dosage” of puree on the spoon. Starting with small amounts and working up, you may find bub is eating 1-2 tablespoons of solids in a meal come 6 months of age.

How often should I feed solid food to baby?

Start with one solid feed during the day of just 1 to 2 teaspoons and slowly work your way up. This feeding chart is planned for a baby who is confident and accustomed to solid foods and perhaps is closer to the 6 month age bracket.

Remember this is not a race, so you may find your bub is older but can work in with this meal plan.

Shopping List

4 pears

4 apples

4 bananas

4 cups pumpkin

4 cups sweet potato

500g peas

This is a good start to introduce a variety of tastes from safe solids. Remember bubs palate is not refined so simple plain flavours that we may find bland, are perfect for babies. The ingredients from this shopping list will make more than 1 weeks worth but its easier to batch cook, portion and freeze + the nutrients will store in frozen food. Alternatively half or even quarter the size of the list to make a weeks worth.

The below meal plan is a guide only and we recommend serving at breakfast where bub is with you after the meal and you can observe bubs reactions whilst digesting through the day. Other meals will remain as breastmilk or formula. Mixing these pouch recipes with breastmilk or formula is an excellent way to help the transition. TIP, to give bub a taste for solids start with the naturally sweet stuff such as pear and apple.

    Once you’ve meal prepped your pouches, it’s time to get organised. Name and date your pouches using the wash off pouch labels and store them tidily in the fridge or freezer using our first in, first out system via the pouch organiser.
